Government 'lacks urgency' over cutting CO2 emissions

A group of MPs accused the government of a "lack of ambition" over its plans to cut carbon emissions. Tim Yeo, the chairman of the environmental audit committee, said the Department for Transport's plans to cut CO2 emissions were lacking urgency. "The department claims its policies are on the right track, but its own projections of future carbon emissions suggest that CO2 from transport will be no lower in 2050 than in 1990," he said.

Virgin Atlantic to trial fuel cut measures

Virgin Atlantic is to conduct a trial using 13 of its aircraft aiming to cut its aviation fuel use while also slashing carbon dioxide emissions. By towing its Boeing 747-400s to take-off areas at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports rather than using the aircraft's own power during December, the airline says it could save up to two tonnes of fuel per flight.

CND launches climate change row

Campaigners and MPs will meet today to discuss how the Government could fund new ways of tackling climate change by scrapping Britain's nuclear weapons programme. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is hosting a public meeting "to address the issue of how removing the threat of nuclear destruction could fund new ways to tackle climate destruction". The meeting comes a day after Tony Blair gave the green light for a new generation of nuclear missile submarines, warning that it would be "unwise and dangerous" for Britain to give up its nuclear arsenal.
